Meteorological Department says no tsunami
by nicholas cheng
Thousands of fish were reported jumping out of the sea onto land in Sabah.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Meteorological Department said no seismic activity has been recorded off the coast of Lahad Datu, where earlier, thousands of fish were reported jumping out of the sea onto land, Tuesday morning.
Its director-general Che Gayah Ismail said though such an incident was usually seen as a sign of a possible tsunami, the department said no red flags have been raised in its detection centres there.
However, Che Gayah was puzzled at what could have caused the strange occurrence.
"From our data, this has actually happened before in Lahad Datu a couple of years ago. I do not know what could be causing this off hand, we will have to study more than just the online video," she told The Star.

Villagers rushed to scoop up the fishes, locally known as Tamban, while others were divided over whether it was good omen or bad omen.
However, local villager Suzila Abdullah, who operates a sundry shop in the village, said that the phenomenon had been occurring in the past three years.
"But it is different this year because the number of fishes are exceptionally high.
"In the past, most would have been scooped up by the end of the day but today there is still a lot more left,'' she said when contacted by on Tuesday.
